NEW YORK (PIX11) --- The NYPD is putting a $1 million mobile command center in Union Square to crack down on illegal vendors, smoke shops, and violence that has recently riddled the area, officials announced Thursday.
The new command center will be on 14th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A and will be moved to address issues in certain locations, according to Mayor Eric Adams.
"We will not tolerate the open disruption of quality of life in our city," Adams said. "This is a big pet peeve of mine."
The NYPD will focus on illegal vending, substance abuse, retail theft, mental health crisis, illegal smoke shops, homeless encampments, and graffiti on private property in the East Village area, officials said.
The neighborhood has seen an uptick in violence following a fatal stabbing during a brawl between street vendors and a deadly shooting in Tompkins Square Park this summer.
