(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Sunday, June 23, marked 12 years since the Waldo Canyon Fire, the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history, began. The fire continued for over two weeks, burned over 18,000 acres, destroyed 347 homes, and cost the lives of two people.

Those who lived in the area at the time remember the sight of the fire moving down the mountain towards the city, the darkened skies, and ash falling like snow. Friends offered their homes for displaced loved ones, and communities faced the devastation of losing homes and beloved landmarks, such as the Flying W. Ranch.
