MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WISH) — A New Jersey teen is dead after being recovered from Lake Michigan on Monday afternoon in Michigan City.
According to a release sent Tuesday by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, just before 2 p.m. Monday, the LaPorte County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting that a teenage male swimmer had gone underwater and did not resurface.
First responders quickly arrived to the Stop 6 beach area and searched the waters. At approximately 2:15 p.m., a Michigan City firefighter located the victim 100 yards west of where he was last seen and pulled him from the water.
Lifesaving measures were started immediately and the 16-year-old from East Brunswick was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Indiana Conservation Officers and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate and say the identity of the victim will not be released.
The fire department says at the time of the incident, the Washington Park Lifeguards had a red flag posted due to large waves and strong rip currents. “We urge everyone visiting Lake Michigan to be mindful of beach hazard statements, warning flags, and changing water conditions,” the fire department said Read Entire Article
