Maya Angelou, a St. Louis native and author, was born in 1928 and earned 30 best-selling titles, an Emmy Award nomination, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and was the first Black woman to write and recite a poem for a presidential inauguration and appear on the U.S. quarter.
