Beech Grove Police Department mourns loss of 4th officer in line of duty throughout its history

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Three Beech Grove Police officers have died in the line of duty. Monday night, Officer Brian Elliott became the fourth after over 25 years.

On Dec. 22, 1972, Deputy Chief of Police Richard Ferguson suffered a fatal heart attack while responding to a traffic accident. He was 44.

Ferguson was survived by his wife, three sons, daughter, sister, and father.

On May 28, 1991, Lieutenant Thomas Klies was killed in a car accident during a high speed chase. He was 43.

He lost control of his patrol car and hit a row of trees on Shelbyville Road near Edgewood Avenue.

A 16-year-old suspect was convicted of reckless homicide and resisting law enforcement was sentenced to six years.

Klies was survived by his wife, stepson, stepdaughter, mother, father, and two brothers.
