Bill to reshape Indianapolis Public Schools governance on way to Gov. Braun

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A bill that would reshape governance of Indianapolis Public Schools is being sent to Gov. Mike Braun.

The House on Wednesday agreed to earlier changes in House Bill 1423 by a vote of 67-30. A day earlier, the Senate had approved the measure 27-21.

The measure would create an Indianapolis Public Education Corp. The mayor would appoint the nine-person board, all who would be required to live within IPS boundaries.

The corporation would control the IPS budget, taking that duty from the IPS school board members, who are elected.

If the governor signs the measure into law, it also would create a single facilities and transportation plan for all traditional and charter schools within the IPS footprint.

The IPS school board would still run day-to-day operations.
