BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — The Indiana Hoosiers’ All-American defensive back D’Angelo Ponds was named the Defensive MVP of both the Rose Bowl and the Peach Bowl in the team’s leadup to Monday’s College Football Playoff National Championship.
The city government of Bloomington on Monday gave him another honor: temporarily naming the retention pond at Miller-Showers Park to D’Angelo’s Pond.
A news release from the city said the honorary name will be recognized for the week leading up to the championship game. The park is at 1500 N. College Ave. is south of the State Road 45 Bypass.
The city government noted that no official signs will be posted, and city maps will not be altered to reflect the temporary change, although the community was encouraged to embrace the fun on social media with photos from the pond.
Democratic Mayor Kerry Thomson said in a statement in the release, “This is peak Bloomington. It’s playful, communal and exactly the kind of wholesome quirk that makes our city so special.”
