INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Gov. Mike Braun on Tuesday said it remains to be seen whether he’ll support challengers to senators who voted against new Congressional maps, though he did not rule it out.
The governor’s comments came as part of a wide-ranging year-end interview with News 8 for All INdiana Politics. They’re some of his first public comments since 21 Senate Republicans voted on Thursday against a Congressional map designed to give their party control of all nine of Indiana’s U.S. House seats. Braun, a Republican, said he was not surprised so many Senate Republicans voted against the proposed maps because Senate President pro tempore Rod Bray, R-Martinsville, was himself against it. He said the vote did not match the wishes of Republican voters.
Braun said he doesn’t consider the results of that vote, or the property tax vote, for that matter, a harbinger of his overall working relationship with the Senate.
“I think all of that is the back and forth, the tussle you’re going to have when, especially, you might be wanting to move faster than the speed at which they may be comfortable with,” he said.
In a statement right after the vote, Braun said, “I will be working with the President to challenge these people who do not represent the best interests of Hoosiers.”
