CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Two Carmel police officers fired at and critically injured an 18-year-old man Thursday night on U.S. 31, Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said.
No officers were injured, but the man was taken to a hospital in stable but critical condition.
A 911 call from a family member of the man alerted police that he was suicidal. Police agencies in the Carmel and Westfield areas then began search for a truck that the man was driving.
Perrine said earlier on X that the shooting happened on 116th Street along U.S. 31.
The two Carmel officers found the truck on the shoulder on 116th Street. Upon their arrival, the man exited the truck and pointed a rifle at the officers, firing at them. They fired at the man, striking him multiple times.
The Hamilton County dispatch system showed the Carmel Fire Department was sent at 6:34 p.m. Thursday to a shooting in the first block of U.S. 31.
No additional details were immediately available.
Southbound lanes were to remain closed for investigators, Perrine said.
