INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Congressman André Carson said the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro violated both U.S. and international law.
Carson serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, including as the ranking member of the subcommittee tasked with overseeing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In an interview with News 8 for All INdiana Politics, he said the only time the president should authorize military action without Congressional approval is in case of exigent circumstances. He said the situation in Venezuela did not meet that standard.
“Donald Trump’s supporters voted for an America First policy and there is nothing America First about kidnapping another president from another country and his wife,” Carson said.
Maduro and his wife were captured at Fuerte Tiuna, Venezuela’s largest military complex, in a raid conducted early Saturday by members of the U.S. Army’s 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, popularly known as Delta Force, accompanied by members of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team.
