Charges filed against suspect in west side shootout that injured 2 IMPD officers

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Marion County prosecutors filed attempted murder charges against a 37-year-old man accused of shooting two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers.

Kreshaun Brinkley, who also sustained injuries in the shooting, left the hospital and is held at the Marion County jail.

The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. Aug. 14 in the 300 block of North Fleming Street on the city’s west side.

IMPD SWAT officers served a narcotics warrant at a home when Brinkley fired at officers as they exited their armored vehicle. Gunfire hit two officers, and IMPD officers returned fire, striking Brinkley at least once.

The shootout lasted for at least an hour, prompting IMPD to issue a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area. Brinkley finally surrendered around 3:15 p.m. and police took him into custody. By the end of the shootout, both sides had fired more than 200 rounds.

Records from Marion Superior Court 31 show Brinkley faces three counts of attempted murder, five counts of unlawful possession of a gun by a serious violent felon, three counts of criminal recklessness, and one count of criminal vandalism.

Brinkley is due in court Friday morning for a hearing....
