Continuing work on US 31 at I-465 in Carmel to bring new restrictions

CARMEL, Ind. (WISH) — Road work to improve U.S. 31 and its interchanges from 96th to 116th streets will enter the third of four phases, leading to monthslong road restrictions and closings starting this week, the Indiana Department of Transportation says.

The Carmel road work, initially estimated at $63 million, was designed to modify the interchange at I-465 and U.S. 31/Meridian Street; upgrade seven overpass deck overlays; and to widen parts of U.S. 31 due to added congestion and more frequent crashes.

In the third phase through the fall, crews will widen the elevated eastbound and westbound I-465 ramps to northbound U.S. 31.

Starting on or after Wednesday, southbound Meridian Street will close between 106th Street and 96th Street through late fall. The 106th Street exit ramp to southbound Meridian Street will also close during this period. However, the 106th Street exit ramp to I-465 will remain open.

On or after Saturday, a temporary traffic shift will be implemented on I-465 ramps to northbound U.S. 31, continuing through late fall. The northbound U.S. 31/Meridian Street ramp to 106th Street and the 106th Street ramp to northbound U.S. 31 will close.
