A crash involving a gas tanker left state Route 67 in Poway closed for several hours Friday morning, authorities said.

The collision of the fuel truck and a GMC Hummer was reported just after 5:25 a.m. near Ellie Lane, less than a mile north of Poway Road, sheriff’s Lt. Sean Gallagher said.

Deputies arrived and learned that the Hummer driver had been headed southbound on SR-67 when the motorist lost control, crossed over the median and collided with the fuel truck, sheriff’s Sgt. Saleem Payman said in a news release.

The Hummer driver was trapped and had to be freed from the vehicle, Gallagher said. Payman said the driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for a head injury, and the driver of the fuel tanker reported feeling pain, but did not require medical attention.

County hazardous materials teams responded to clean up what Payman said was a minor fuel leak from the tractor part of the big truck. Gallagher said none of the fuel the truck was hauling spilled.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours, reopening fully about 11:30 a.m.
