David Malukas headed to hospital after crash during Nashville practice

LEBANON, Tenn. (WISH) — IndyCar driver David Malukas is being transported to a hospital after a hard crash during Saturday’s practice in Nashville.

The Team Penske driver slammed into the wall and was slow to get out of his No. 12 Verizon car once the AMR Safety Team reached him.

IndyCar Deputy Medical Director Dr. Angela Fiege initially announced that Malukas was “awake, alert and in good spirits while continuing to undergo evaluation” at the Nashville Superspeedway medical center. Twenty minutes later, IndyCar said Malukas would be transported to a nearby hospital “via private vehicle for further evaluation and testing.”

Malukas and the rest of the IndyCar drivers were practicing before this afternoon’s qualifying for the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix.

In his first year with Team Penske, Malukas remains the top driver on the team, sitting fourth in the championship standings ahead of the Nashville race. He’s finished runner-up three times this season, adding a third place finish in Phoenix earlier in the year.
