A single round fired by a sheriff’s deputy during a call for service in Lakeside on Wednesday missed the suspect, but the man was still taken to a hospital for evaluation, investigators said.
The shooting occurred shortly after deputies received a call from a family member about a possible overdose on Briette Place just north of Interstate 8 around 10:30 a.m., sheriff’s Lt. Christopher Tivanian told Sideo TV.
When deputies arrived, they did not find the person at the home whom the welfare check was originally about, Tivanian said. A short time later, deputies near the scene found a person matching the man’s description a few streets over on Pinkard Way.
“When they encountered the individual, he told deputies that he was armed with a handgun,” Tivanian said. “He was directed to keep his hands visible. He did not.”
Tivanian said the man then reached for his waistband behind his back, and a deputy fired a single shot in the man’s direction. The bullet missed, and the man fled from deputies.
Deputies pursued and detained him after a brief altercation, Tivanian said.
He was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Tivanian said. The extent of the man’s injuries was not immediately known.
A firearm belonging to the man had not been located at the scene as of Wednesday afternoon.
No other information was immediately available.
