Columbus Township trustee sentenced 28 years for stealing taxpayer funds

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — Benjamin Jackson, a former Columbus Township trustee, will spend the next three decades behind bars bars after stealing $1.1 million dollars in taxpayer funds, a Bartholomew County judge ruled Wednesday.

On July 22, Jackson was charged with nine counts of theft and nine counts of official misconduct. Jackson resigned from his position after Indiana State Police began a criminal investigation in November 2024.

A report from the State Board of Accounts found Jackson began using the township credit card for personal expenses as early as 2016, a direct violation of township policy.
