AVON, Ind. (WISH) — An 18-year-old man wanted in Florida was taken into custody after shots were fired in a standoff with police in a residential subdivision on Monday afternoon, the Hendricks County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release issued Monday night.

The release said deputies were called about 1:15 p.m. Monday to report of a “mental run” at the home of the 18-year-old, Marquis Virgil, in the 1900 block of Bridgewater Drive. That’s in the Bridgewater housing subdivision in the Hendricks County town of Avon.

The release said Virgil had previously made threats to shoot police and was armed. Authorities later learned he had an active arrest warrant for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon from Florida. Details about that case were not provided in the release.

Upon arrival, deputies staged down the street while a negotiator attempted to communicate with Virgil. During this time, a female who was in the home was successfully evacuated.

At some point in the standoff with police, Virgil started firing shots at an armored vehicle from inside the house, prompting authorities to ask nearby residents to shelter in place.

After several hours of negotiations, Virgil tried to flee on foot from the home but was apprehended by police.
