GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — A Greenfield man is behind bars after police say his infant son was found wearing nothing but a diaper outside in below-freezing temperatures.
The Greenfield Police Department arrested Logan Nickolas, 20, Monday afternoon.
According to a probable cause affidavit, police were originally called to the Prairie Meadows Apartment Complex off of U.S. 40 just after 3 p.m. Monday when a 911 caller reported seeing a crying infant outside in the cold wearing only a diaper.
Upon arrival, officers found the child, noting they were “cold and with red skin.” One officer held the child in their coat before putting them in their patrol car to warm up.
The temperature in Greenfield at this time was around 13 degrees, police say.
Medics rushed the child to the hospital, finding that the “child’s core temperature was approximately 93 degrees” and had “severe hypothermia with frost bitten extremities of the fingers and toes.”
While searching the apartment complex, investigators tracked the child’s footprints through the, following them 750 feet to the apartment they believe he came from.
The affidavit says officers announced themselves several times before entering the apartment. Police noted a baby gate at the top of the stairs was unlatched and partly opened.
