Greer Grammer Breaks Silence on Dad Kelsey Grammer Estrangement: The ‘Meanest Thing’ He Ever Said

Greer Grammer is sharing details behind her complicated relationship with her dad, Frasier star Kelsey Grammer — including the moment she says hurt her the most.

During a recent appearance on the “Pretty Basic Podcast,” the Deadly Illusions actress, 33, reflected on reconnecting with Kelsey after more than a decade with little contact. Greer was 4 years old when Kelsey left, and the two reconnected when she was 16 — but it took a few more years for a difficult conversation to surface.

“[Grammer] was always my last name,” Greer said, noting that she stayed connected to her father’s identity even when he wasn’t around. “I guess my dad did ask my mom — he told me this later — but he was like, ‘I told your mom… I said it might be better for you to not have my last name. It would be easier for you growing up.'”

It wasn’t until she was 19 that she learned about his request regarding her name — and the impact was immediate.

“I think I was like 19 when he told me that and I started sobbing, because to me that was like the meanest thing you could ever say to somebody, like… ‘I knew I wasn’t gonna be in your life, so I told my mom it would probably be easier for you to not have my last name.'”
