How to avoid porch pirates this holiday season

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As the holiday shopping season is upon us, Indiana State Police want Hoosiers to be aware of “Porch Pirates” and know a few other safety tips to ensure a fun and safe holiday season.

When in-store shopping:

  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Park in a well-lit area and always lock your car.
  • Use extra caution when walking to and from your car.
  • Avoid carrying cash.
  • Don’t leave purses unattended in stores.
  • Place gifts and valuables in the trunk of your car – out of sight.
  • Always have a fully charged cell phone.
  • If shopping with children, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard in case of separation.

For those who want to skip the lines and shop from the comfort of their couch:

  • Before entering any card information, see if the web address on the page begins with “https:” not “http:”.
    • The “s'” lets you know the website is secure and will protect your information.
  • Use credit cards or PayPal to purchase online items.
  • Don’t click on any pop-up links.
  • Avoid using public Wi-Fi.
