INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As the holiday shopping season is upon us, Indiana State Police want Hoosiers to be aware of “Porch Pirates” and know a few other safety tips to ensure a fun and safe holiday season.
When in-store shopping:
- Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
- Park in a well-lit area and always lock your car.
- Use extra caution when walking to and from your car.
- Avoid carrying cash.
- Don’t leave purses unattended in stores.
- Place gifts and valuables in the trunk of your car – out of sight.
- Always have a fully charged cell phone.
- If shopping with children, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard in case of separation.
For those who want to skip the lines and shop from the comfort of their couch:
- Before entering any card information, see if the web address on the page begins with “https:” not “http:”.
- The “s'” lets you know the website is secure and will protect your information.
- Use credit cards or PayPal to purchase online items.
- Don’t click on any pop-up links.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi.
