‘I planted that tree’: In this South Bay school district, kids are a ‘voice of leadership’ on the environment

A South County school district just got state education officials’ top honors for outstanding achievements in environmental excellence, known as the Green Ribbon Awards.

National School District is among five “Green Achievers” statewide, a combination of districts and schools recognized for resource conservation, health promotion and environmental literacy.

Over the last decade, the National City district has saved over 1 million gallons of water each year, and it has diverted more than 1,000 tons of waste, cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 13% and improved energy efficiency, the state said in an announcement.

Those gains came through comprehensive operational upgrades, student-led initiatives and projects aligned with sustainable development goals.

The district started with simple efforts to improve sustainability, and over a decade, the impact added up, Superintendent Leighangela Brady told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

“We engaged the kids in being the voice of leadership and telling us what we needed,” she said.
