INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis police say a fight over catfish leftovers between two roommates ended with one in the hospital and the other behind bars facing several preliminary charges.
The investigation into 30-year-old Davante Payne started on Friday, after IMPD officers were dispatched to Community North Hospital around 8 p.m. after receiving a report that someone had been injured in an attack and robbery.
The victim told police the incident happened in the 800 block of Gray Street. According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim and their roommate, Payne, had been arguing over a catfish and French fry meal left over from the day before.
Payne reportedly told the victim they owed him $10 for the meal, but the victim replied that the meal wasn’t worth $10, and he would pay him $3. The victim told officers as “Payne started rushing” them, they were “reaching out to (their) friends to get someone to send him the $3.”
The altercation then turned physical, the victim telling detectives Payne kicked them in the head, attacked them with a mini-baseball bat, and fired a gun at them.
At one point, the victim passed out. Payne later stole two of the roommate’s phones and their keys; the victim told officers Payne said he would sell the phones to collect payment for the $10 dinner.
