Indiana House approves stricter SNAP and Medicaid requirements, checks

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana House just passed Senate Bill 1 which, among other things, does the following:

• Bans purchasing candy or sugary drinks with SNAP benefits (codifies Braun administration policy into law).
• Sets income limits and immigration status requirements for SNAP.
• Biannual eligibility checks for Medicaid.
• Immigration status checks for Medicaid.

Much of this is an order to comply with the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

This was the primary priority bill for Senate Republicans. It has to go back to the Senate because of some changes the House made.
