Indiana’s new vehicle registration law takes effect Jan. 1

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A law goes into effect on Thursday that requires Hoosiers to update their vehicle registration if their vehicle’s exterior appearance has changed.

Earlier this year, Gov. Mike Braun signed Senate Bill 331 into law, which requires vehicle owners to notify the Bureau of Motor Vehicles if a person changes the color of their passenger vehicle in the following ways:

  • Application of paint.
  • Installation of partial or full vinyl vehicle wrap.
  • The removal of a partial of full vinyl vehicle wrap.

According to a release by BMV Indiana, failure to report color changes to your vehicle within 30 days could result in a warning from law enforcement. If the vehicle’s color was changed after it was used in the commission of a crime and the BMV was not notified for the change, the owner of the vehicle could be charged with a Class C misdemeanor.

Customers can update the color of their vehicle on their registration by visiting a BMV branch, a BMV Connect kiosk if their registration is already scheduled for renewal, or by logging on to their myBMV account.

For a complete list of branch locations and hours, to complete an online transaction, or to find a 24-hour BMV Connect kiosk near you, visit IN.gov/BMV.
