Indianapolis man sentenced to 29 years for cocaine dealing, gun possession

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man was sentenced to 29 years in prison after his conviction for dealing cocaine and illegally possessing firearms.

A news release issued Tuesday from Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced the sentence for Curtis J. Gaines Jr. The sentencing happened Friday in Marion Superior Court 32.

Gaines, 42, was convicted of multiple felony charges in February following a two-day jury trial. The release said the case originated from a May investigation where law enforcement officers seized several types of narcotics and weapons from an apartment on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

The convictions against Gaines included felony counts of dealing cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a narcotic drug, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. A count of possession of cocaine was vacated on Friday. After the jury returned the guilty verdicts, Gaines pleaded guilty to a habitual offender sentencing enhancement.

The release said the investigation involved multiple units within the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. They executed a search warrant at an apartment in the 3900 block of Breen Drive. That’s at the Arborstone Apartments northeast of the intersection of North Post Road and East 38th Street.
