Indy DPW plans to treat roads ahead of overnight freeze

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) is treating roads ahead of a significant drop in temperatures Sunday night into Monday morning. 

Storm Track 8 forecasts a roughly 40-degree swing on Sunday, from record high temperatures in the upper 60’s to below-freezing temperatures in the 20’s overnight. 

With a line of storms bringing rain ahead of the freeze, Indy DPW officials say crews will treat roads across Indianapolis overnight and continue addressing roadways through Monday morning. 

“Indy DPW asks people to drive with caution and practice safe driving habits when winter weather hits our roadways, even after the snowfall has ended,” the department said in an announcement. “Motorists are asked to give space to our drivers so they can properly treat and clear roadways.”

While there could be a few spots of light snow, Storm Track 8 meteorologists say the big concern on the roads is flash freezing from the rain. Though strong winds from Sunday’s storm could dry much of the rainfall and mitigate widespread freezing. 

Indy DPW officials ask residents to be mindful of empty trash carts potentially being blown over by gusty winds.
