INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Cathedral boys basketball is headed back to the state championship for the fifth time, and its first time since 2022.
Cathedral senior guard Julien Smith said it’s something that’s not really surprising, that this is the standard for the team. However, the chance to bring a state championship back to Cathedral still brings out the emotions.
“It’s super exciting,” Smith said. “It’s a dream. Growing up, this is all I’ve wanted to do, is be able to play here at Gainbridge for a state championship.”
“I’m very excited,” Cathedral senior guard Keaton Aldridge said. “It’s like a dream. Senior year, coming down to the end, last game, state finals, this is where everybody wants to be.”
Cathedral faced a challenging road to get back to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, taking down the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in Class 3A (Silver Creek and Princeton) on the same day in semi-state.
The Fighting Irish embraced an underdog mentality to win those games, specifically against Silver Creek, who was 29-1 heading into the game.
“It felt like everybody was against us,” Smith said. “It felt like we were the underdogs. That made the win so much better. Going into that game, we knew how hard we worked for it. We knew how hard we prepared for it. We didn’t have no worry. We knew what we were going to do, and we did it.”
