NEW YORK CITY (WISH) — IU quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy.
Mendoza becomes the first IU player to win the award.
Mendoza received 2,362 votes and 643 first place votes. He beat out Heisman finalists Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia (1,435 votes), Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love (719 votes), and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin (432 votes).
The IU signal caller has helped lead IU to a 13-0 record so far this season.
He led the Hoosiers to their first Big Ten Championship Game victory and first Big Ten title since 1967 when IU topped Ohio State, 13-10, inside Lucas Oil Stadium.
He had plenty of signature Heisman moments throughout the season.
With IU down four points with under two minutes remaining in the game against Penn State, Mendoza led the Hoosiers on a 10 play, 80 yard touchdown drive to take the lead and win the game. It was capped off by an incredible throw off his back foot to a leaping Omar Cooper Jr., who miraculously was able to get a foot in bounds in the back of the end zone. It was Mendoza’s signature Heisman moment.
Mendoza also threw the go-ahead touchdown to Elijah Sarratt in the Big Ten Championship Game, and a 33 yard pass to Charlie Becker on third down just before the two minute warning that helped IU run down the clock to beat Ohio State.
Plus, with the game tied and less than two minutes...
