KOKOMO, Ind. (WISH) — A 62-year-old Kokomo woman was arrested for attempted murder Tuesday after stabbing a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier and causing two car crashes.

The Kokomo Police Department says the incident began around 6:12 p.m. in a neighborhood off Main and Madison streets.

When police arrived, they discovered the female letter carrier with multiple stab wounds. Witnesses at the scene described the suspect and their vehicle, later identified as 62-year-old Laura Fortson and her 2004 tan Buick.

Fortson fled after the initial attack, but caused two personal injury accidents during her escape. Her Buick eventually became disabled after the second collision on nearby Ohio Street.

Fortson was taken into custody, where she later admitted to detectives to attacking the letter carrier.

She faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness, intimidation with a deadly weapon, and possession of methamphetamine and paraphernalia.

Police say they expect additional charges to be filed for the car accidents.
