La Mesa police arrest teen suspected of shooting cannabis delivery driver during robbery

La Mesa police announced Thursday that they have arrested an 18-year-old Imperial County man suspected of shooting a cannabis delivery driver during a robbery earlier this month that set off a large manhunt for the suspected gunman.

Detectives also arrested three other teens — two 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old defendant — who they said were co-conspirators in the robbery, according to La Mesa police Lt. Travis Higgins.

The victim, described only as a man in his 40s, is expected to survive the gunshot wound to his neck that he suffered during the Jan. 5 robbery, Higgins said in a statement.

According to police, the shooter and one other accomplice approached the delivery driver around 4 p.m. and demanded his property while he was on Williamsburg Lane, a short dead-end road just off El Cajon Boulevard near Parks Avenue.

During the robbery the alleged gunman shot the driver without warning, Higgins said. He and his alleged accomplice then took off through an apartment complex at the end of the roadway.

Police launched a manhunt for the duo, using two helicopters from neighboring law enforcement agencies to circle the area broadcasting descriptions of the assailants, but they escaped.
