MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WISH) — A La Porte County deputy is in critical condition after being shot Friday morning at Franciscan Health Michigan City hospital, police say.

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy as Jon Samuelson. He was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital and was last listed in critical condition.

According to state police, who is handling the investigation, around 6:45 a.m., Samuelson stopped what he thought was a disabled vehicle on State Road 2 and County Road 900 West, which is about a mile east of Westville.

The deputy took 22-year-old Sharod Grafton Jr., of Chicago, the vehicle’s sole occupant, to the hospital at his request.
