“My work begins with fabric, treating fashion as a sculptural and kinetic exercise, but it is through this material exploration that cultural commentary emerges.”
One of Malta’s foremost fashion artists, Luke Azzopardi creates luxury ready-to-wear, bridal wear and jewelry whose timeless elegance stems from his academic background in costume history. Azzopardi is a couturier and multidisciplinary artist whose brand, Luke Azzopardi Studio, colours outside the lines and definitely beyond boundaries.
He is one part designer and one part cultural commentator and he doesn’t differentiate between the two. “I don’t see those identities as separate,” he says confidently. “My work begins with fabric, treating fashion as a sculptural and kinetic exercise, but it is through this material exploration that cultural commentary emerges. I am deeply interested in the rites and rituals that hold societies together, particularly those surrounding death and coming-of-age, and in how clothing can mark, contain and honour these thresholds. Designing is a cultural commentary, and cultural commentary is a form of design. They coexist in the folds, seams and weights of each piece I create.”
Proud of his island, Azzopardi and everyone at his studio are committed to both sustainability and ethics. They are proud to champion the “slow fashion” movement, upholding the highest ethical standards while keeping their environmental impact to a minimum. Passionate, fierce and independent, Azzopardi is much like his island itself.
