Man in custody after hours-long barricade situation in southern Utah

HURRICANE, Utah (ABC4) -- Officials in southern Utah were able to take a man into custody after he barricaded himself in a home for more than five hours on Thursday, July 4.

Officials were first called about the situation around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 4. The call was about a "possible suicidal male," according to a joint press release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Hurricane Police Department.

"It was reported the male was armed and in the street in front of his house," the press release said.

The man was armed with a rifle and a handgun, according to officials. He was barricaded in his home and negotiators were working to find a "peaceful resolution," the press release said.

As the situation was unfolding, Hurricane Police issued a shelter-in-place order. Residents were also asked to refrain from setting off fireworks during the incident.

Just after 9:30 p.m., officials were able to take the man into custody.
