INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Oakland City University on June 1 will lay off 167 employees, it said in a notice to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
University leadership attributed the workforce reduction to ongoing financial challenges.
The layoffs affect 110 full-time employees and 57 adjunct and part-time workers. Employees received notices April 1.
Ron D. Dempsey, president of Oakland City University, said in the notice to the state that the separations may become permanent.
The university’s website says the top five majors are business, criminal justice, education, university studies, and psychology. U.S. News and World Report says the four-year university had 502 students in fall 2024. The private, faith-based institution is operated under the guidance of the General Baptist Church
Oakland City, a Gibson County town of about 2,300 residents, is about a 40-minute drive north of downtown Evansville.
The university issued a formal notice about the layoffs to the state in accordance with the Federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.
