One person died following a six-vehicle crash in La Jolla Thursday evening, San Diego police said.
Several people called 911 just before 8:30 p.m. to report the crash on Torrey Pines and Hidden Valley roads, near La Jolla Parkway, Sgt. Saum Poorsaleh said. The heavily traveled area is sometimes referred to as “The Throat.”
Poorsaleh said police officers and firefighters arrived to find bystanders performing life-saving measures on one of the crash victims. They took over those efforts and transported the person to a hospital, where the person died.
The initial investigation indicates that the driver of a 2011 Toyota Tundra ran a red light and broadsided a 2015 Lexus CT200 SB, which was heading through the intersection on a green light, Poorsaleh said.
After colliding with the Lexus, the Tundra then collided with two other vehicles, and those vehicles struck two other vehicles, the sergeant said.
The person who died had been an occupant of the Lexus. It was not immediately clear if any other people were injured in the multi-vehicle crash. The department’s Traffic Division is investigating the crash.
