Great Lakes Ice coverage 2/3
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This should come as no surprise, given our arctic air in the region over the last couple of weeks, but ice coverage on the Great Lakes has dramatically increased.
As of Monday, 51% of the Great Lakes is covered by ice. This is well above the average ice coverage to date, which stretches back to 1979, of 29%. Over 90% of Lake Erie is covered.
For those wondering, in 1979, nearly 95% of the entire Great Lakes had ice coverage. That percentage is still the benchmark in the record books.
