INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Rescuers returned to the East Fork of the White River in Columbus on Wednesday to continue the search for an 11-year-old girl who disappeared on Tuesday.
Just before 6:40 p.m., crews were called to Mill Race Park for a water rescue. Mill Race Park is located at the point where the Flat Rock and Driftwood rivers join in downtown Columbus, forming the East Fork of the White River.
The girl, who is from Columbus, was “playing with friends on a sandbar when she waded too far out and was caught in the river current,” according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
Columbus firefighters and the Bartholomew County Water Rescue Team searched for four hours before calling off operations due to darkness.
The search resumed at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.
