(WISH) — A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until midnight Tuesday for much of northern Indiana, were severe storms were aplenty early Tuesday night.
The watch does not include the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Counties in the watch area are Adams, Allen, Blackford, Carroll, Cass, De Kalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Howard, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, Lagrange, La Porte, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Steuben, Tippecanoe, Wabash, Wells, White and Whitley. The watch area includes the cities of Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Kokomo, Lafayette, Marion, South Bend and West Lafayette.
The watch, which extends into Ohio, was issued at 6 p.m. Tuesday from the National Weather Service Severe Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma. Severe thunderstorm warnings had already been issued for the area when the watch went into effect.
A storm warning for several counties in the watch area at 6 p.m. Tuesday alerted people of the possibilities of 60 mph gusts and quarter-sized hail. Hail damage to vehicles was expected, as well as wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.
A tornado warning was issue for parts of Huntington, Wabash, Wells and Whitley counties from 6:40-7:15 p.m. Tuesday. The storm near North Manchester was deemed capable of producing a tornado, moving southeast at 45 mph. Quarter-sized hail was expected.
