Snowy conditions lead to ‘dozens’ of crashes on Indiana Toll Road

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WISH) — “Dozens” of crashes happened late Monday morning on the Indiana Toll Road near South Bend and caused delays and injuries, the Indiana State Police said in a news release issued Monday night.

Injuries were reported, with people transported to nearby hospitals; however, none of the injuries were considered to be life-threatening, the release said.

Reports of crashes began around 11:15 a.m. Monday amid snowy and windy conditions that affected motorists’ visibility, the release said.

About 5 miles west of the U.S. 31 interchange for South Bend, Plymouth and Niles, Michigan, several vehicles lost control on a bridge, prompting a pickup truck towing a trailer to collide with the bridge wall, investigators think. That crash caused more collisions and left vehicles stuck on the eastbound lanes for miles.

Eastbound traffic was diverted off the Indiana Toll Road at the State Road 49 interchange for La Porte, and westbound traffic was diverted at the U.S. 31 interchange for about four hours.

Additional crashes were also reported in St. Joseph County and LaPorte County due to the hazardous driving conditions persisting throughout the afternoon.
