(WISH) — Spain are World Cup champions again after a dramatic 1-0 win over Argentina in a FIFA World Cup final that stayed scoreless through regulation and most of extra time.
The breakthrough finally came in the 106th minute. Spain whipped a cross into the box, where Ferran Torres timed his run perfectly and fired a laser over the goalkeeper to give Spain a 1-0 lead. The goal was Torres’ biggest of the tournament and Spain’s 14th overall.
Offensively, Spain dominated the entire match. Spain recorded 12 shots on goal to Argentina’s 0.
Argentina pushed for an equalizer in the closing minutes but couldn’t break through Spain’s defense. Spain’s defense was nearly flawless all tournament, conceding just one goal. In the final, Spain’s excellent defense proved true once more, keeping Lionel Messi and the defending World Cup champs quiet for more than 120 minutes.
Spain are World Cup Champions for the first time since 2010.
