Suspect shot after opening fire on Chula Vista police in Spring Valley

Chula Vista police shot a domestic violence suspect who authorities said opened fire on officers as he tried to flee, first in a car and then on foot after crashing into a vehicle late Thursday afternoon.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was shot in the leg, sustaining an injury not considered to be life-threatening, San Diego police Lt. Lou Maggi said in a news release. San Diego police are investigating under a countywide agreement designed to prevent law enforcement agencies from investigating themselves after a police shooting.

The incident began about 5:25 p.m. when Chula Vista officers responded to a report of domestic violence that may have involved a gun, Maggi said.

While at the scene, someone directed their attention to a vehicle the suspect may have been driving.

Maggi said officers ordered the driver to stop, but the driver “accelerated the vehicle” toward an officer, nearly striking him.

The suspect drove off, with Chula Vista police in pursuit.

The fleeing driver crashed into an uninvolved vehicle near the intersection of Sweetwater Road and Tyler Street in Spring Valley, according to the lieutenant.

The driver then got out of his vehicle and opened fire on the police officers as he tried to run off, police said. A sergeant and an officer returned fire, shooting the suspect in his leg. Chula Vista police Sgt. Anthony Molina said the shooting occurred about 5:40 p.m.
