INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Wednesday will be a regular day for students at a school on the Indianapolis southwest side, despite a large hole in one of the classrooms.

Police and firefighters responded just after 8:50 a.m. to a structure collapse at Lynwood Elementary School/Liberty Preschool, 4640 E. Santa Fe Drive, near South Lynhurst Drive and Kentucky Avenue.

Crews arrived and discovered that an SUV had driven into one of the classrooms.

The crash occurred before the start of the school day, and there were no students in the classroom. A teacher who was in the room was unharmed, according to the Decatur Township Civil Fire Department.

No one inside the building was hurt.

The fire department says the driver of the SUV was unhurt, and her child was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Firefighters determined the building sustained “moderate damage, but it did not affect any structural components,” according to the department’s Facebook post.

It took crews about an hour to remove the vehicle from the classroom and tow it away.

Investigators have not said what caused the crash or if speed was a factor.
