A three-alarm fire early Monday gutted part of a Spring Valley strip mall, causing an estimated $4.2 million in damage, before it was extinguished by fire crews, officials said.

Several people called 911 to report the fire at Worthington Street near Paradise Valley Road around 2:45 a.m., sheriff’s Lt. Jason Phillips said. Fire officials said the blaze gutted four units in the mall and also damaged two cars that were parked nearby.

When fire officials arrived on scene, they called for additional resources because of the size of the fire. In all, about 70 firefighters from San Diego, Chula Vista, National City and Bonita fire departments assisted San Miguel Fire and Rescue, Fire Chief Andy Lawler said. Lawler described the building as an older strip mall that is at least 50 years old.
