TIPTON, Ind. (WISH) — The City of Tipton announced in a Tuesday press release that they have been awarded $6.6 million in federal transportation funding through the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Local Public Agency program. The purpose of this money is to complete the reconstruction of Jefferson Street through downtown Tipton.

The funding was provided through the Federal Highway Administration and administered by the Indiana Department of Transportation. It will support the second phase of the Jefferson Street reconstruction project, which will focus on improvements from Independence Street east to State Road 19.

The first phase of the project has already been founded through a previously awarded Indiana Department of Transportation’s Local Public Agency grant. It will reconstruct Jefferson Street from Buck Creek to Independence Street.

The reconstruction will include a full-depth reconstruction of the roadway, along with upgrades to the buried utilities running beneath Jefferson Street. The project will also include construction of a 10-foot multi-use path designed to connect the west side of Tipton to the east side.

Construction of the second phase is expected after completion of the first phase and is currently anticipated to occur around 2031.
