Trump signs order bringing special IndyCar race to Washington, DC

WASHINGTON (WISH) — President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to “celebrate American greatness” with a special 500-style IndyCar race in Washington, D.C., this summer.

The street race, dubbed “Freedom 250 Grand Prix,” will be held near the National Mall in honor of the country’s 250th birthday, is free, and will be open to the public. It will be the first motor race held in the capital.

Trump signed the order in the Oval Office Friday morning, according to the White House. Roger Penske, owner of Team Penske, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and IndyCar, was present at the signing.

The full order, according to a White House fact sheet, called for the following:

  • The Department of the Interior and Department of Transportation to “designate a suitable race route that showcases the majesty of Washington, D.C., and its iconic national monuments.”
