Two arrested in shooting death of couple in Grant Hill

Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a couple in Grant Hill on Monday, a San Diego police homicide lieutenant said.

The ex-girlfriend of one of the victims and her new boyfriend were arrested hours after the couple was gunned down, Lt. Louis Maggi said in a news release. He identified the suspects as Princess Perez, 25, and boyfriend Ramses “Rex” Morales, 21.

The lieutenant identified the victims as Ruben Chavez, 31, and Evelyn Virgen, 28.

According to Maggi, an anonymous person called 911 just after 12:25 a.m. Monday to report seeing two people on the ground on 27th Street just north of Imperial Avenue. Police responded and administered life-saving measures to the couple, but they died at the scene.

In a nearby car, police found three children under the age of 2 and took them into protective custody. Maggi said Tuesday that the car was registered to Virgen, and she is the mother of the three children.

Maggi said investigators learned that the victims “had both been involved in an ongoing dispute” with Morales and Perez, who is Chavez’s ex-girlfriend.

He said Perez and Morales had been in the area when the shooting occurred but fled before police arrived.

Federal officers detained the pair just after 10 a.m. — less than 10 hours after the shooting — as the two tried to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
