Vop Osili to end 8-year tenure as council president in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis City-County Council President Vop Osili announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election as council president in 2026, marking the end of his eight-year tenure in the role.

Osili will continue serving as a councilor after stepping down from the presidency.

Mirror Indy reported on its Facebook page that he is one of several Democrats — including State Sen. Andrea Hunley and Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears– rumored to be considering running for mayor of Indianapolis in 2027.

He said in a statement in a news release issued from a public relations firm, “Serving as Council President has been one of the greatest honors of my life. This decision comes after deep reflection.”

“I will have more to share soon,” he added, without confirming that he’s considering another political office at this time.
