Woman dies after driving through floodwaters in Delaware County

YORKTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — Investigators believe a 58-year-old woman died after trying to drive through floodwaters that swept her vehicle into a Delaware County cornfield.

Delaware County Sheriff’s Department deputies found the woman’s body Friday in the 4100 block of South Bell Creek Road, about a mile southeast of downtown Yorktown. Her vehicle was in a cornfield about 100 feet west of the road, and her body was found 50 feet away from the vehicle. A dog was also found dead inside the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said the woman likely tried to drive through moving water covering the road when the current pulled her car away. Investigators believe she tried to get out of the car once it was in the field but was overcome by the water.

Heavy rain has caused significant flooding in the area over the last two days. At its peak on Thursday, the water on Bell Creek Road was more than 3 feet deep.

Emergency crews rescued another driver from the same location on Thursday after their vehicle became stranded in high water.

The sheriff’s office has not released the woman’s name while they notify her family.
