DENVER (KDVR) – Denver Public Schools is working to finish installing air conditioning at seven more schools before the start of the school year on Aug. 19 using funding that was provided by a bond measure in 2020.
Carson Elementary School is one of the schools getting AC installed this summer. Gary Uba, the project manager, told FOX31 the work is very complicated because the school was built in 1951.
"The ductwork is all new, these units are all new," he said.
Scott Pribble, a DPS spokesperson, said the AC will improve the learning environment. In years past, classroom temperatures have reached the upper-80s or 90 degrees which forced administrators to send students home early.
"So, by retrofitting these buildings and putting air conditioning in, it's really going to impact the learning that's happening because they'll get the full days at the beginning of the school year," Pribble said.
But even when these projects are complete, there will still be 29 other DPS schools without AC.
