Almost 90K remain without power in northern Indiana after disastrous storms

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More than 87,000 people are still without power in northwestern Indiana now a full week after disastrous storms moved through the Hoosier State.

Northern Indiana Public Service Company, or NIPSCO, reported Tuesday that 81% of power had been restored throughout the entire Region, though there was still work to be done.

Of the estimated 87,300 still in the dark Wednesday morning, around 73,000 of those were in northern Lake County. Neighboring Porter County reported just under 9,000 were without electricity.

Fourteen hundred people were still waiting for service to be restored in LaPorte County, according to a U.S. power outage map.

Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said Tuesday afternoon that NIPSCO was actively working in the area, though he did not provide a specific number of residents without power.
